“I would tell my younger self that my world didn’t fall apart when I came out, like I thought it would."
Was there a definitive moment you realized you were trans? How old were you?
Young - however I didn’t have the language in my vocabulary to describe how I felt. I remember as early as preschool wanting to dress in basketball shorts and t-shirts. I was always a tom boy, but even dressing that way did not alleviate my dysphoria.
How soon after did you start to make changes? What were these changes?
I was 19 when I first acknowledged the thought that I was transgender. I came to this point through therapy and being vulnerable. I began transitioning at 22. I started by taking testosterone before I even came out to anybody. 3 months later I came out to friends and family. I cut my hair and I changed my name. A year later I got top surgery. 2 years later I got a total hysterectomy + vaginectomy.
Have these changes started to make you feel more comfortable in your life and body?
Yes, 100%. Hormone therapy, hair cut and wardrobe changes and top surgery have been a game changer. Being able to pass and be seen as who I have always been is very comforting and makes life much more enjoyable.
What would you tell your younger self? Would you do anything differently?
I would tell my younger self that my world didn’t fall apart when I came out, like I thought it would. The people closest to you embraced you and loved you.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
My mother through my transition has provided such emotional comfort. When I came out, it was over a phone call and she told me, “I am not sure what this journey will look like for you, and I know it will have some challenges, but know that I support you and love you and we will figure this out” . I am unbelievably lucky to have that kind of support and I encourage anyone who doesn’t have that support to know it exists and to seek it out whether it be in a medical provider, therapist, friend, or partner.
Have the gender-affirming steps you’ve taken impacted your overall happiness and sense of well-being?
Yes.
